Train Crash

A rush hour collision between two Washington D.C. Metro trains late Monday afternoon has claimed the lives of 9 commuters and left several injured.

The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. on the above ground track near the District of Columbia and Takoma Park, Maryland border.

John Catoe, the Metro general manager said a moving train collided with a stationary train that was on the same track, the Red Line.

Chief Dennis Rubin of the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department for the District of Colombia confirmed that a total of 76 people were injured and treated at the scene with two life-threatening cases. Washington Hospital admitted seven patients from the collision with injuries ranging from minor to serious. The neighboring Howard University Hospital took in three of the crash victims and Suburban Hospital in Maryland admitted two, reports CNN.

D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty said one car was "about 75 percent compressed" and noted that it remains unclear if there are any bodies left inside the cars.

This is tragic. My heart and prayers go out to the families of the victims and the entire D.C. area.
